Subject: [New-imc] better coordination

Hi everyone,

Now that we have a number of people involved in the
new-imc working group,
perhaps we should be clearer about who is doing what.
If I'm not mistaken,
the raw breakdown of point people is:

Europe:
Bart, Tony?

Latin America:
Gaba, Dri

U.S.
Jay, Sharpie, Sarah, Chris
(specifics:
Rochester -- Jay
Pittsburgh -- Chris
Tallahassee -- Sharpie and Sarah working together
[sorry I wasn't clear on
suggesting you work together, rather than just sending
you two similar
messages encouraging you each to work on the
Tallahassee app]
Michigan -- Jay, Sascha
Cleveland -- ?? Sascha?? imc-midwest??
Charleston -- Sharpie)

Canada
Deja

Africa
Jay so far, with help from others

Australasia
Praccus (welcome back :)

General assistance has been coming recently from Boud,
Sheri, Ana, Evan,
Christopher, and a whole group of other wonderful
people (thatcher, are you
still out there? gekked?). Am I missing anyone or
anything obvious?

Just a reminder, before I sign off. More communication
is better than
less, I believe. Cc'ing the list on public
communication with the imcs
with whom you're corresponding is a good idea, as well
as keeping everyone
generally up to date on how things are going.

Sorry if I missed anyone,

Jay

The Eastern Mediterranean IMC
http://EasternMediterraneanIMC.cjb.net
is regional imc- association which has been created
*specifically* around the creation and expansion of
indymedia in our region of the world, conceived as a
project of political and cultural radicals, and media
activists.

We have been slowly "getting it together", and working
to overcome the tremendous obstacles of ethnic,
religious, and cultural prejudices dividing our
peoples, and also language barriers in addition to
military conflicts and intelingence operations pitting
us at each other's throats.

Our work is slow, difficult, but very rewarding for us.
As an alliance of regional radicals our members have
succeeded in creating Cyprus Indymedia, which is still
not online but is a full member of imc (we're beginning
trilingual tests on the bandwidth co-op server soon),
and we are in support of the emerging recreated Turkey-
imc (Istanbul -imc just submitted its application to
new- imc workgroup, and it seems there might be more
cities coming).

We also have unfinished business, and failures.

Unfinished:
Our contacts in the region have not all been fruitful.
Beirut- imc seems to have vanished (recent
communication with "blue pee at @yahoo.com"
from indymedia Germany and right now in Beirut, plus
previous letters we exchanged attest to that); our
contacts from Egypt have gone silent; the communication
we had begun to build with our colleagues at Jerusalem-
imc were interrupted by the war, the "human rights
tourism caravan", and the delicate position of Cyprus
in facilitating an end to the Bethlehem Nativity church
siege (things are still hot in Palestine, but we'll
able to communicate with less craziness soon).

Failures:
We have failed to establish trust and co-operation with
the Athens- imc and Thessaloniki- imc. The absense of
trust degenerated to the point that in the Fall of 2001
both those imc- groups made clear political decisions
about not working with us. We still would like to see
those relationships improved, but we also respect their
decision, and so we do not push ourselves on them.
Hopefully we'll work things out and manage to create a
better environment among us.

We're really open to your views, comments, questions,
and above all, we need your help.
