Hi Kevyn,
My name is Jay and I'm part of the Philadelphia IMC, and I'm also involved
with the new-imc list. I saw your e-mail come across that list a couple
weeks ago and haven't been able to respond until now. I don't know if
anyone else has contacted you yet in response to your message. If so,
great. If not . . . hi!
I think your idea of traveling around with remote media-making gear is
tremendous, and I'm sure people will really be excited when you and your
grease roll into town. :) Generally "local IMCs" are based in geographic
areas, and come to be as a result of a lot of nuts-and-bolts face-to-face
organizing. I don't think a roving bus would qualify as "a local IMC" per
se, but that doesn't mean it can't be a project a lot of IMCs could support.
My suggestion would be to start contacting local IMCs in the areas you'll
be visiting, and spend some time while you're there getting to know them
and how the network works. After you've passed through a few IMCs, I'm
sure those people will help you make contacts as you go along. Shortly
into your tour, people along the way will be expecting your visit. They'll
also get to know you personally, and some trust will develop in a way that
will help pave the way for increasing connections with the network.
In other words, I say go for it! Gather as much gear as possible, and
contact IMCs directly to invite yourself to visit. I'm sure they'll be
happy to see you, and will add some of their ideas for your tour onto the
ones you already have.
I hope this is a helpful suggestion. Others from the new-imc working group
may have other ideas, or another take on the matter entirely. Whatever the
case, very good luck on your adventures, and I'm excited to hear the great
media that will come out of your bus.
