One of our (IMC-Ithaca) members is in the process of moving to
Nashville, and has been attended a few meetings. Based on our
discussion tonight I'm feeling really positive about this new-imc.

My only concern is that I've heard they're trying to encompass a large
geographical reigion, all of the state. This was done in NC with good
results, I think mostly due to their willingness to spawn sub-groups
with the hopes that these would become their own IMC.. I think that if
this is their goal, to serve all of their state, that discussion of how
to include people/groups from other parts of the state and prehaps some
studying of NC's experience should take place..

I was also told of all the great stuff they were doing.. spawning audio,
video, print, etc right from the start. Looking at their list archives,
this seems to be true. Word of caution, that spreading resources too
thinly up front can lead to alot of people feeling discouraged. If the
energy is there for it, great, but it may be better to do one/two things
really good, then branch out down the road. I guess it depends if
there's people involved (ie) that just want to do print, others just
radio, etc.. vs 10 (or so) general IMC people trying to do everything
themselves. Bottom->Up (people getting involved who want to do things
organizing working groups/etc) vs Top->Down (core group of people
deciding what forms of media they want to produce), stuff to think about.

I'm not holding up the process here, just voicing concerns/hopes.
I think this group is doing a really great job!

Have they discussed the network membership criteria & principals of
unity? Discussed decidion making process, etc? There's a mission
statement and editorial policy, but I didn't see much else. I'd like to
see this IMC get official soon, they've been in the process fairly long
at this point and seem to have all their other ducks in a row!
