[New-imc] more on topic imc's

Hey all,

Boston IMC's original plan was to create boston.indymedia.org/dnc/, but we
were struck by the notion that, in wanting to give the DNC section it's
own dedicated components, one website with two newswires, two calendars,
etc., could get distracting, if not outright confusing. So Boston is
definitely opting for a topic IMC as well.

Thus, dnc.indymedia.org was requested. I think it was the simplicity of
the title that drove the request, matched with the notion that the first
thought visitors might have in looking for indymedia coverage of the DNC
would be.. dnc.indymedia.org. And there was talk about while creating
dnc.indymedia instead of dnc2004.indymedia would make for easier archving
post-July and easier implementation for the next convention, yes, a DNC
specific site would be bankrupt during the years inbetween.

I wholeheartedly agree that the RNC and DNC IMC websites should share the
same url, save for the reference to the contestants. Hell, lets even do
similar designs if you kids really wanna throw down. =) But I will come
out and say (personally; not speaking for the Boston IMC collective right
here), I'm not a fan of the democraticparty.topic.indymedia.org DNS. It
went from three simple letters to something that looks like an e.e.
cummings poem. And I think if visitors don't know half a second after the
page loads that dnc.indymedia or rnc.indymedia is a "topic imc", then we
need to look at the design or they need to clean their monitors. Don't
get me wrong; bht's totally right on that it'd be nice to have websites
that don't automatically go defunct during the DNC/RNC offseasons. But is
it too general, a site covering the WHOLE democratic/republican party?
What would we have on it? Who would the ediotrs/admins be following the
conventions? Is this such a broad topic best left to the the local imcs
doing local coverage?

But, it's cool. Honestly, to the RNC gang: If you guys can secure
republicanparty.topic.indymedia.org and the global dns is having a 2 for 1
special on names, someone grab us democraticparty.topic.indymedia.org,
please. Then maybe if majority allows for a shorter name we can do some
name-forwarding or something. Most of all, I'm reminded daily that Boston
has 7 months to go and no website, which is personally freaking me out.

Dunno. As with most IMC discussions, there's viable opinions on both
sides, and deadlines around the corner. =) So, round and round we go..
anyone else with thoughts on the matter?
