Hi,

Istanbul:
first of all I wondered whether the tech problems of IMC Istanbul aren't an
issue we should be concerned with. I mean, we are here to help new imc's,
but the most help most of them need is probably technical - if that's not
working we can be just as friendly, caring and helpful as we want. They have
asked people from mir now, if they can help them (see email below), but
there one has rightly pointed out that the sf active site is almost finished
and that it wouldn't make much sense to start all over again. Should we
approach the sf active people and try to resolve the conflict they are
apparently having?

US:
Well, as boud has pointed out: We will never be able to manage if noone from
the US is helping here. My suggestion: We should call for help on the US
lists.

IMC Beirut: I have just one remark, because Boud mentioned I should take
this application to imc process: Petros is responsible for IMC Beirut (I
couldn't be since I am part of the IMC, right?). By the way: Thanks Petros
for your encouraging words.

Hi trez,

Baris is down with the flu today. So here is the
'background info' you asked on IMC Istanbul:

yes, we passed the new imc process and everything
else. In fact, we started live web production, but we
had some problems with the SF tech people (we had
contact with only one of them). Baris can give more
details on this subject, but let me say that, we
couldn't get the support we hoped to. The volunteer
from SF tech claims that the site:
http://istanbul.indymedia.org is 'fully functional'
and we can't understand how he can say that when none
of the links on the left column or top are working.
This is the situation for some weeks now. And since we
wanted to publicize IMC Istanbul before the Iraq war,
a considerable tension mounted between Istanbul and
the volunteer from SF tech. He claimed that we were
trying to push him around. But this was not so. Now,
it seems that we have to accept the site in this
condition, or wait for an indefinite amount of time,
which we can't.

Now, the istanbul mailing group has more than 50
members, quite a number. Of course the meetings are
more smaller, not more than 20 people. There was a
natural decline in interest during the last months of
2002, because everybody was waiting for the technical
issues to be solved. Now, since we have started live
publishing in January, things are gaining momentum and
interest is on the rise; we have succeeded in
establishing a routine of publishing daily reports of
anti-war news from all around Turkey. And now we are
hoping that we can extend the scope.

I joined the Istanbul initiative in the summer of
2002. The group was working and meeting long before
that. Attached you will find text documents of the
'indymedia-Istanbul statement of principles' dated May
2002. To ask for more details on the workings of the
group before 2002 summer and in general, you can write
to barkin at: barkinkarsli at yahoo.com

As for 'mir', we will write to the mir coders list as
you say, since we have decided to use 'mir' and will
need their help soon. Does 'mir' run on Windows or
only on Unix?

bon voyage to cuba, then. when do you depart?

best regards,

balaban
