Somebody asked about IMC estrecho and IMC Canarias:
Here is a map, on the left down corner you can see Lanzarote, one of the 7
Canary Islands.
http://www.pirieworld.ca/trip.html

Canary Islands are part of the spanish State, although it is as far from
Spain as the UK is. And it's closest coast is Mauritania. The vast
majority of it´s inhabitants are from Spanish origin, after the local
indigenous tribes (guanches) were cleared out.

Canary Islands are Spanish Speaking but have a history of their own, very
related to the spanish colonisation of America, as it was a last port for
Spanish ships before crossing the Atlantic ocean towards american
colonuialism. The ties between Canarians and former Spanish colonies as
Venezuela and Cuba are much more stronger than anywhere else in Spain.
Canarians even share some words with Cubans.

One of the reasons Canary Islands come up to the headlines is the problem
of illegal immigration of southern sahara africans trying to reach Canary
Islands as a way to enter Europe. Hundreds of dead bodies, inhuman
retention center, police corruption, mafia....

A simmilar scene in continental Iberian Peninsula. The scene of piling
dead bodies in the beach is also a reality in Andalucia, immigrants try to
reach the coast on small boats known as "pateras". And the story repeats
itself again: repression, punishment, corruption.

For this reason people from this areas wanted to confront this alienating
situation building up an Indymedia covering all the area concerned with
what goes on in the southwest of europe. Estrecho Indymedia would cover
areas like Morocco, Sahara, Canary Islands, Andalucia...On top of this
there is room for descentralisation, and although the founders of IMC
canarias are happily part of that project, they would like to have an IMC
on their own in order to reflect their reality, and self organise as an
IMC instead of being part of an IMC which majority of members are more
than a thousand kilometers away.

I hope I explained it all right.

I see it was maybe soon for calling for a deadline so I ask for apologies.
People from IMC estrecho are well ahead with their project and I think
that as soon as they send the requested documentation we could have a
deadline request, as for IMC Canarias, they will have their first meeting
in July 20th so we can still wait they go all along the process.
