Hi Chris,
My name is Jay, and I'm involved with the Philadelphia IMC. I have also
been part of the new-imc working group, on and off :), for a while. I'm
helping U.S.-based aspiring IMC groups like your own work their way through
the new imc process.
Obviously you're familiar with the Indymedia network and your group seems
to have done a great deal of work to get to this
point. Congratulations!! How do you feel your first meeting went? Are
you starting to meet regularly now? I assume you've been through the
newimc.indymedia.org site, and have looked at the step-by-step process for
having an IMC join the network. If not, take a good look. It's pretty
clear, but feel free to e-mail me and/or the new-imc list if you have any
questions.
As you know, getting to be an effective, functioning, sustainable IMC is no
easy task. You apparently have done some great organizational
outreach. Now the face-to-face meetings begin . . . :) Feel free to take
all the time you need to get the group together through further
face-to-face meetings. As I'm sure you'll find, while many organizations
will throw their support behind the IMC, you may need to take a while to
figure out which individuals are actually going to be doing the daily
work. Of course, consistent diverse outreach is a must also, especially in
a place as diverse, in so many ways, as Tennessee. (is there a reason why
you're calling yourself the Tennessee IMC instead of the Nashville
IMC?? How broad has your outreach been outside of Nashville?) Basically,
what I'm saying is, from the way your e-mail sounds you're doing all the
right things. Keep doing them. As I'm sure you know, the more time you
take toward making sure your organization is solid from the beginning, the
stronger and more sustainable your IMC will be as you go foward.
Keep us all up to date,
Jay
