[New-imc] CAIRO IMC (several e-mails from organizers in Cairo)

Hi new-imc,

Here are several e-mails from Cairo IMC organizers
supporting the immediate opening of a Cairo IMC. I've
stripped names and e-mail addresses so they don't go
on a public list, but I'm sure they wouldn't mind me
giving them to individuals with specific questions.

Just to let you know, most of the below e-mails are
from Egyptians who seem to be studying or working at
the University where Ian teaches. That makes sense
because that would likely be the group of people with
most accessible e-mail access. In working with them
to open a permanent IMC we'll certainly want to know
how far their group reaches beyond the University
(though Ian has indicated they have several NGOs and
other organizers already involved).

 Dear Jay,

as you know from Ian's correspondance, there is a
great need for
a Cairo IMC at this time. On Ian's advice, I am
sending this request
and
sign of support. Please let me know if there is more
that I can do.

I am all for this move. We need an independent media
centre. What can individuals such as I do to help,
except to voice such a request.

Dear Jay,

I am writing to you to add my voice to those
requesting that you help us by allowing us to set up
an imc-cairo straight away..

on Thursday we had the biggest public demonstration
held in Egypt..and it felt so good to be allowed on to
the street to demonstrate..everyone I spoke to there
felt a need to write about what we were
experiencing..I was speaking to a long-time activist
that day and we both agreed that we need IMC as a
rallying point, to tell people about what is happening
and to mobilize them and keep them updated.. it could
make such a huge difference! and especially now that
things have turned so ugly...there have been mass
arrests over the past two days..up to 1500 people have
been rounded up and taken away..that they will be
tortured in common knowledge.

I don't know how we can assure you of the urgency of
the issue and of our own commitment to it..and I can
understand that you need to be sure that we are who we
say we are and that we are serious about this. I don't
know whether Ian can give you access to the archives
of the E-group we have been using, but that would show
that there are many people involved..

tell us what we need to do to make this happen..

couldn't you just trust us for a month or two?

PS: I am an Egyptian graduate student studying
international human rights law

I am emailing you in order to inform you on my support
for Indymedia center for Cairo.

I am a political scientist, French native, living in
Egypt for several years and I really feel the need to
establish an independant center for information in
Cairo.

For instance, recent articles published in the French
press on the last demonstrations which happened in
Cairo stress the need for this center : information is
not accurate, events are not related with sense of
coherence, etc. Having followed the demonstration,
published several communiques, we had in Cairo
problems for disseminating the information through
other means than email list !!!

Dear IMCers,
We need a Caior IMC today before there is no civil
society left to
contribute to one. Why hasn't one been started?
Regards,
