Hi evan,
As a matter of fact, I'm meeting with Myung-Joon Kim from Labor News
Production (lnp89.org) this morning to discuss matters about IMC-Korea
and its prospects. As you may know, due to being the "most wired
country in the world", there's no lack of activist media forums and
networks in South Korea. There's even www.base21.org for up-to-date
news in English. Most of these groups have many resources and are
completely self-sufficient. So, much of the work that will go into
outreaching to pre-existing groups will consist of conveying the need
for an IMC-Korea. While language is always a big reason, for South
Korea, the reason there isn't a IMC-Korea already also could have to do
with some that do not feel like they need any "help" by joining a
network like IMC, which they could even see as a "western-centric" way
of controlling what constitutes "independent media". Political
differences can also be an obstacle.
All of the people on board the IMC-Korea project so far, including
myself, however, feel that a creation of IMC-Korea will be an
invaluable resource and will end up contributing highly to the existing
networks of independent media as well as further popularizing
participatory media-making in South Korea.
