outreach:
Because Alaskas population is small, many people end up working with a variety of organizations whose focus is to bring about positive change in the realm of
environmental, economic & social justice. Over time, these groups evolve, reorganize & change, yet many of the same people continue doing the work of the movement. Some of us have worked together in these various groups & continue on-going connections with them, so bring the energy of these groups together. (Issues include environmental justice, peace/anti-war, native rights & sovereignty, environmental conservation.) We expect to continue doing outreach so as to create space for those who\'ve felt disenfranchised to have a voice, for themselves as well as for the greater
community to hear. In addition to work within the state, some of us have networked outside the region as well, in particular with Media Reform and Tools for Change.
introductory_statement:
As with many communities in this country, we have lost the diversity of opinion in our mainstream media. Issues that most affect communities are often not discussed in depth or are not covered. This has been especially frustrating as the missile defense system is installed in alaska. There has been little public debate although this will affect Alaska for decades to come & is an issue of international significance. Alaska is strategically significant to the military and is often treated as a developing nation by the resource extraction industries among them logging, fishing, oil and mining. Alaska is on the frontline of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge debate, where cultural, environmental and national security issues collide. These factors shape Alaskas media perspective, which is often from an economic baseline. We need independent media & the Indymedia network provides a framework for that. The network has done much of the hard work of agreeing on principles, missi
on, process, etc. It feels like a natural to link into. In addition, it gives us the opportunity to be part of a greater collective voice, working in a democratic way to build relationships around the world & across cultures.
