We are in favour of the proposition of WVL and Liege (http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/imc-wvl/2003-July/000722.html).
But we think that it is too early to implement it and that it will take some time. The local initiatives (until now unexistent besides WVL and Liege) will need time to develop and grow. We want to take steps to support and help those new collectives in order to prepare for the implementation of the proposal. There have to be more new local groups. We think the mediacircus (1) can play a role in this process. We don't think that you can't define "local" only as "provincial".
We think that the start of IMC-Vlaanderen would go against this logic. This is not meant as a local site but more as an alternative for the actual IMC-be. We don't think there is enough 'room' for two supra-regional sites in Belgium. It would mean a huge loss of forces and energy. We also fear a situation like we have here with ATTAC in Belgium where there is not only an Attac-Belgique and local attacs but also Attac-Vlaanderen, Attac-Wallonnie-Bruxelles, Attac-Bruxelles, Attac-Bruxelles-Capitale and Attac-Brussel. All of them competing against each other.
This is the point of view we want to defend towards IMC-global.
(1) About the mediacircus
The mediacircus is a project of the indymedia-collective by which we wanted to include more people in Indymedia.be. The project started a year ago and was quite succesful. More than 100 youngsters participated in it. We gave them mediaworkshops and made short videos with them. But it still was a problem to really involve those new volunteers. We concluded that you need a sort of a framework that is hard to combine with the daily work of indymedia.
The people we worked with last year are asking for a permanent follow up. Therefore we decide to go on with this project and to give it a permanent structure. Several organisations are interested to collaborate with us.
