If we're telling people who want to make an IMC based
on Andean culture, in a country as vast as Colombia, that they should try
integrate with the Colombia national site before proceeding separately,
then it seems a little unreasonable to encourage two competing IMCs within
the city of Washington DC. I would think that the bickering among
different Belgian IMCs should serve as a lesson about what happens when
you have two different IMCs based on political and personal differences in
overlapping geographic territories. I've worked with IMC DC, and yes they
do have interpersonal tensions, but so do all of the activist groups in
DC, including the Anti-Capitalist Convergence. Chuck's already actively
involved in Infoshop, which is a very fine news source and complements
Indymedia well, serving as a good counterpoint and sharing content at
times. There's no need to reinvent the wheel by developing another IMC.
Philadelphia has multiple independent media outlets, based on different
political ideas, interests, and communities. Some are integrated within
the IMC, some are not. However, we do not have multiple IMCs and in
general we try to encourage harmonious coexistence, and
occasional collaboration and content-sharing between the different media
groups. It's not necessary to share the Indymedia brand name.
However, last year, I did hear an interesting idea to form an
IMC-Anacostia, run by local activists and reporting on issues local to
Anacostia (the Anacostia river runs from nearby Maryland counties into
DC, where it empties into the Potomac River and eventually the
Chesapeake Bay). This seems like a much more sensible
approach to take, rather than having two competing IMCs with exactly the
same geographic boundaries.
Take care,

> Washington, DC has one of the oldest IMCs in the Indymedia network. While they are doing good media activism, the chemistry of the current collective is alienating to local activists and they really don\'t have any support in local communities. This project is being proposed because a city of over 2 million should be able to support multiple IMCs, especially when that city has lots of media activists already.
