some opinions...
I have no problem with multiple IMCs existing within one urban area - I have mentioned before that I would love to see a Harlem IMC and a Bronx IMC, etc. I am not making any evaluation about whether DC has given it enough of a shot to work together yet, but in collectives where that point has been reached I think the idea of people who are unable to work together doing different IMC projects is basically a good one. I am also strongly in favor of more topic IMCs.
I think Chucko's application is meant more as a test of the system than a real proposal. He doesn't refer to any supporting groups or even a collective that currently wants this project, it's apparently just him. So, I don't think there's any point really trying to talk about moving forward on the application at this point, since it is so incomplete. I also think it was inappropriate to send the application to imc-process. However, I am generally in support of autonomous collectives functioning within one urban area, as long as they each have enough diversity and resources to function. It is very easy for outsiders to say all the activist journalists in one city should just be able to work together, but it's not always the best thing. The history of alternative groups, from the Lutherans to the Weathermen, shows us that splintering just happens, no matter how cool the idea is of everyone working together.
