Personally I don't give a rat's ass about the name. If it was up to me I would put my efforts into a media project where there wouln't be 90% of the energy going into power play. But this would mean a huge feeling of pain for not having been able to do it in a magnificent network like Indymedia. Because I have no choice but to work in Belgium, and here the infighting seems to come with the name. This is a shame for the network as a whole, and it doesn't show a lot of respect for the movement and the philosophy of alternative media.
There is not a single person in the world who can tell me if I can make media or not. It is even a democratic right in every book of law. It is just a matter of where this is done and how. The philosophy of IMC is sound, anybody anywhere can pick it up and use it like it is meant to be used. I do not need permission to make people to write about the things that concern them.
You can say and think what you want about Indymedia Vlaanderen or pingpong or whatever. It doesn't touch me anymore. Just stop playing your little games with me. Suppose that Global would say that IMC Flanders should not be? I would just write to Z-net or whatever, or gather some likeminded people and try working together in a positive atmosphere whatever the name. It would mean about the same thing, but without all the negative vibes and infighting.
Perhaps that would be better. You just have to make up your mind, make a choice. Just this: when you say I cannot work in Indymedia, you better shut up about outreach or trying to get more people to join, because it would only mean a gross lie. I have no doubt that the new imc people can see this.
Maarten, independent writer whatever the name.
