Hi there, new-imc,
Over the last couple weeks bht, Jeff from the Miami
IMC and I have been communicating about a way to get
the Miami IMC back on track to join the network.
The Miami group is small, but is doing a lot of
organizing and media work, have a radio project going
and have their web site back up (hosted by
imc-pittsburgh, I think). They feel as if their not
being recognized by the new-imc group has hindered
their outreach to diverse communities. On the other
side of things, a concern from the new-imc group was
that they hadn't been doing enough successful outreach
to diverse communities in the first place for them to
join the network.
A circle.
How do we break this logjam? The proposal (pasted
below) is that if the miami IMC prepares an outreach
onslaught the new-imc working group will support their
joining the network. They can then advertise, as part
of their outreach, that they're about to join the
network. Both things accomplished.
Sounds too good to work out, huh? But I think it may
be worth a shot.
So, bht, Jeff and I have passed around the below plan.
Take a look and respond if you have any concerns.
Otherwise, within a couple weeks the Miami IMC will
develop an outreach plan and start circulating their
documents the new-imc working group list.

proposal:
The new-imc group will support the Miami IMC's
application to join the Indymedia network. Bht,Jay
and other new-imc volunteers will work on the basic
membership criteria documents with Miami and togehter
we'll all set a target date for Miami's documents to
go through the new-imc at indymedia.org mailing list.
Barring any unforseen dissent, we imagine the
documents will pass both new-imc and the imc-process
group according to the schedule we will develop.
As that is being prepared, the Miami IMC will work
with bht and/or other network volunteers (especially
those who are working with Miami on its web site code)
to put together a very clear, detailed
outreach/diversity plan.
Part of that plan will be an initial outreach push
that will coincide with the days leading up to the
date set for imc-miami's documents to pass through the
new-imc process. In other words, imc-miami will be
able to use its proposed entry into the indymedia
network as a way to drum up diverse energy for the
IMC, and the IMC will be able to use its commitment to
diversity as a way to gain support within Indymedia
for its joining the network.
Also, as the Miami IMC is revving up to the date set
for joining the Indymedia network, some of its active
members will join some of the global Indymedia e-mail
lists and introduce themselves. This will help people
in the network get to know people in the Miami IMC,
and may also help empower some members of the Miami
group to participate more equally within the IMC.
After the Miami IMC joins the network, several of us
(people in miami, bht, jay, those throughout the
network who are involved in Miami's web site code and
radio projects, and anyone else who is interested)
will make sure to keep up with Miami's development.
In six months from their entry into the network, and
then a year, the Miami IMC will look at the IMC
network principles again (and also with the questions
relating to diversity recently added to the new-imc
documents, which I'll post below) and see how they're
doing in fulfilling them. This will be a way to do
some internal introspection and will help keep the
IMC's focus on building a solid infrastructure.
