Well, I'm not sure I'm convinced that IMC-Valparaiso has recognized the
importance of really thinking through the diversity questions, but on the
other hand, I'm not sure we can force to think seriously about it. Can
somebody perhaps recommend some reading on racism, classism, sexism among
the left or something? They seem to think that because they have recognized
that these things are wrong, they are beyond these problems. I do not think
any of us can leave behind these problems that easily. I think we must all
constantly keep in mind the social background that we come from, and that
unless we are vigilant about rooting out racism, sexism, classism, etc.,
our IMCs will replicate the wider society.

There is no shame in admitting that one's own collective is not successful
in being antiracist, antisexist, antiheterosexist or whatever. I venture
to guess that most IMCs have a problem with gendered work division,
overwhelmingly middle-class membership speaking about the issues that affect
low-income folks, and, at least in the US, a mostly white membership. I
think the first step to working through these problems (I think they're
problems anyway) is to admit that they are there and be up front about it.
We are never going to change the world simply by substituting a "more
progressive" subset of the people who already have all the power for the
current leaders. We need to empower those who are disempowered--we need to
work for media justice.

That said, this is not a block. I just want to keep us thinking about how
we deal with the answers to these questions and why they're important.
