Hi, we hadda get this sorted and approved by collective so forgive
delay.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

No problems from Darwin IMC with Principles of Unity

Principles of Unity

1. The Independent Media Center Network (IMCN) is based upon
principles of equality, decentralization and local autonomy. The IMCN
is not derived from a centralized bureaucratic process, but from the
self-organization of autonomous collectives that recognize the
importance in developing a union of networks.
____________

Yes. We network extensively already. And are getting more groups
involved all the time. We are on a number of IMC lists. And have been
'mentored' by Perth IMC to some extent.

============

2. All IMC's consider open exchange of and open access to information
a prerequisite to the building of a more free and just society.
____________

Sure. Bearing in mind Ed Pol considerations.

============

[3. All IMC's respect the right of activists who choose not to be
photographed or filmed.]
____________

Never been a problem, but we would respect such requests.

============

4. All IMC's, based upon the trust of their contributors and readers,
shall utilize open web based publishing, allowing individuals, groups
and organizations to express their views, anonymously if desired.
**see appendix: Open Publishing document (still in proposal phase, at
this address:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-communication/2001-April/00170
7.html)
____________

Yes. Once again bearing in mind Ed Pol considerations. Personal
attacks, obvious disruption and misinformation are most likely to be
hidden. Political views that differ are welcome as they spur debate.

============

5. The IMC Network and all local IMC collectives shall be
not-for-profit.
____________

Not a problem. It costs us to keep this project going. And we run our
own info' sites on much the same basis.

============

6. All IMC's recognize the importance of process to social change and
are committed to the development of non-hierarchical and
anti-authoritarian relationships, from interpersonal relationships to
group dynamics. Therefore, shall organize themselves collectively and
be committed to the principle of consensus decision making and the
development of a [direct, participatory democratic process] that is
transparent to its membership.
____________

Yes. The activists associated with Darwin Independent Media are in
groups that follow autonomous and non-hierarchical models of
organisation already. Confuses the (hierarchically organised) Courts
and Police immensely. Collective meetings are open to all.

============

7. [All IMC's recognize that a prerequisite for participation in the
decision making process of each local group is the contribution of an

individual's labor to the group.]
____________

Sort of a natural process with us - although the best ideas tend to
get up eventually, whoever makes them. But yes -- non-contributors
are considered to be essentially non-participants. Given the
collective individually are still responsive to ideas from other
sources and may 'sponsor' such a suggestion.

============

8. All IMC's are committed to caring for one another and our
respective communities both collectively and as individuals and will
promote the sharing of resources including knowledge, skills and
equipment.
____________

All of Darwin Independent Media's collective do volunteer work of
some kind to help the community and work with eachother in other
projects. We hope to getmore Aboriginal people involved in cyber
projects, etc...

============
9. All IMC's shall be committed to the use of free source code,
whenever possible, in order to develop the digital infrastructure,
and to increase the independence of the network by not relying on
proprietary software.
____________

We already use Perth IMC's code and agree with the principles of free
source code.

============

10. All IMC's shall be committed to the principle of human equality,
and shall not discriminate, including discrimination based upon race,
gender, age, class or sexual orientation. Recognizing the vast
cultural traditions within the network, we are committed to building
[diversity] within our localities.
____________

We are a collective that promote such ideals extensively and have
people involved who work to publicise the plight of marginalised
groups. We have also included a protocol for Aboriginal people in our
Ed Pol that recognises 'their' cultural diversity. A point often
overlooked.

IMC MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA No disagreement (given the flux some of the
definitions are in -- and will always be :-) Most of the points
covered above in POU.

IMC-Communications - Yeah we'll sort out a person. We'll work on a
mission statement later. Adopt Network Mission Statement for the time
being.

We believe in independent media - and our own information sites
reflect this fact.

Most tech stuff - city lists etc... already happening.
