Hi Bart,

No worries, here's a short intro but not an activist CV ;0)

I'm from Birmingham (UK) and we're in the process of getting an imc
together for Birmingham. There's about 20 people on the mailing list at
the moment and we're beginning to make some use of the TWiki
(http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/ImcBirmingham) We'd appreciate
any help in any form in terms of setting up an Imc - doing outreach and
so on and reflections from existing Imc's.

Before we go 'live' we've decided to do some kinda outreach work to
ensure a more participatory and representative collective. Hopefully
it'll ensure we'll have people actively making some content too. We've
already done some Indymedia cinema screenings in Birmingham to snowball
some interest in Indymedia not just among activists but more generally
in the commmunity. We hope that by showing examples of independently
made media, like features and particularly shorts, that people will get
some insight not only into what Indymedia is but what it can do
potentially for them in terms of giving voice to grassroots groups and
getting their news on the newswire. We're also aware of the fact that
we can also initiate grassroots things as a group and network with
existing campaigns and other imc's nationally and internationally.

We've already done two screenings, Unprecedented along with a short
version of Eye of the Storm's Indymedia Argentina and some of the ENR
number 12 at the Midlands Arts Centre
(http://www.mac-birmingham.org.uk/) and We Interrupt this Empire and
some NVDA shorts in a local venue/social centre. We're scheduled to
host the BEyONdTv.org Medicine Tour on 13th May at the Custard Factory
in Digbeth Birmingham along with some local DIY acts. We're
particularly interested in getting hold of films that attempt to
explain what Indymedia can do - Indymedia Argentina achieves this very
effectively although it's a little long for a short. Perhaps in the
future we could get a short together - we've got Portland's A Call to
Media Arms that's very effective too.

We're also very interested in how other imc's like Bristol (UK) have
used community news as a very participatory medium for their imc. A
speaker from Bristol was scheduled to talk at the
Unprecedented/Argentina Indymedia screening but they couldn't make it
so we got Dave from Indymedia London to come up and give a really
engaging talk about Indymedia its inception and progress to date. We've
also got access to some warehouse space to do some workshops in the
future. In the next few week we're also meeting up with some community
groups to see what kind of help they need.

Keep in touch and thanks for getting back to us so quickly,

Alex
