Hi all,
just to let you know we are taking first steps to establish an IMC-BURMA
for Burmese journalists and activists in exile. My name is Kim and I am
working with Ying Tzarm fromthe Shan Women's Action Network at Community
Radio 4ZzZfm in Brisbane, Australia. We are also collaborating on a
Burma Indymedia. I am going to help get burma indy through the "hoops"
because I have done it with Brisbane indymedia. www.brisbane.indymedia.org
as you probably know, Burma has been under the dictatorship of a
military regime for many years and literally thousands of burmese
refugees are living in thailand in border refugee camps. witht the
support fo amny international agencies, they have amnaged to survive,
and now a burgening independent/pirate media movment has arisen within
thailand. but things are not so safe there either: the thai govt has
recently taken to lockign up some burmese activists in exile and is
making mvoes toestablish trade links with burma. the UN will soon be
goign into burma to see to start repatriation of refguees. yet daw aung
sung sui kyi is still under house arrest and all communications
controlled by the military. huamn rights abuses including
extra-judicial killings, forced labour and military gang-rapes still occur.
we have secured hosing from nomasters in melbourne and the oceania-imc
crew have been very helpful. catalyst in sydney have set up a
communications list for us at:
http://lists.cat.org.au/cgi-bin/m/listinfo/burma-indymedia
we have established a netwrok of about 30 volunteers to help start us
off. however, we are lacking in skills.
***we REALLY need a geek who can help with the technical side of
things. if someone can offer to set up our test site while we work on
the written process, we would be SO grateful! :) we can probably look
after any small tweaks from there.
regards,
kimk
