Walt hi!

This is how we deal with fascists (or spammers) in Athens:

When someone from the editorial collective sees a fascist post or
comment, he/she hides it and sends an "emergency" mail to the editorial
mailing list , alerting everybody that we have a possible attack by
fascists. Usually they continue to post for about 1-2 hours, but the
trick is to hide their posts immediately. Having 2-3 people on alert
(or sometimes just only one) checking every new comment-post that comes
in, that can be very easy. This immediate response has a phycological
effect on the spammer, that sees everything he/she sends disappearing
in a matter of seconds.

The bottom line: i think the key to repelling spam attacks is to be
quick and very desicive, and not taking second thoughts on hiding
fascist crap or spam. To achieve that there has to be a constant
observation of the neswire, sometimes comment by comment, and that
requires that a lot of people are involved in that task.

Until now, we haven't organized this more formally, since almost all of
the time somebody is online and checking the newswire. However, as the
flow of info is growing all the time, breaking up this observation
into "shifts" would be a good idea.

This is an approach that requires a considerable amount of time and
energy, but i think it is essential if you want to keep a truly open-
publishing newswire.

I hope this was of some help :-)

fascists, but have been very succesful in repelling them."

the local collectives would be most receptive ears.
