To Whom It May Concern:
Harold Lloyd was one of the greatest movie stars in the world and a pioneer
of movie comedy. He was to the 20s what Cary Grant was to the 30s and 40s,
Jimmy Stewart was to the 50s and 60s, and what Tom Hanks, and Jackie Chan are
to the present day. He was an Everyman. A likable guy just looking for love
from the girl next door - a guy in search of a happy ending.
Harold Lloyd, the legendary silent film comedian and film maker, has inspired
some of today's most prominent TV and film personalities including Jackie
Chan, (the reining heir to Harold Lloyd's physical and thrill comedy style);
Conan O'Brian (who has imitated Harold Lloyd's antics in a promo for his
television show "Late Night with Conan O'Brian"); and Jude Law (who has
mentioned that he was influenced by Harold Lloyd and watched his films
growing up in a 2001 New York Times article).
The image of Harold Lloyd hanging from the hands of a clock, high above a
busy city street, remains one of the most iconic of American film. HAROLD
LLOYD: Master Comedian (Abrams, May 2002, $45.00) by Jeffrey Vance and
Suzanne Lloyd, (granddaughter of Harold Lloyd) with a Foreword by Jack
Lemmon, is the first illustrated book to explore the life and complete work
of one of the true geniuses of film comedy.
Published to coincide with the release of a series of 18 digitally restored
and re-scored Harold Lloyd films to air on Turner Classic Movies, a major
retrospective this spring at NY's Film Forum, and this summer at the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art. This extraordinary book gives us much needed
insight into this singular star. Illustrated with never before published
photographs, and a text written with complete access to Lloyd's closely
guarded archives, HAROLD LLOYD: Master Comedian is a vivid account of Lloyd's
innovative movie making and compelling life story.
Suzanne Lloyd, the granddaughter of Harold Lloyd, is the sole trustee of The
Harold Lloyd Film Trust. Suzanne Lloyd will be in Seattle August 27 2002 for
the Seattle Silent Film Festival at the Paramount and I would love for you to
interview her for your publication… please let me know.
I look forward to speaking with you.
Best,
