Title: Washington Residents Amass for Day-Long "Stop the War" Retreat
Over 1,300 Washington residents gathered at Garfield High School on
Saturday to participate in "A Day of Commitment to Stop the War," sponsored
by the SNOW (Sound Nonviolent Opponents of War) Coalition. Musical
performances in the first half of the day were punctuated by speakers
addressing the local effects of war on immigrant, low-income, spiritual,
and minority communities. Short 'reportbacks' highlighted a variety of
actions taken against the war in recent months by local neighborhoods and
organizations.
<p>Later, participants broke out into 25+ geographical and special interest
groups including Seattle neighborhoods, regional areas of Washington,
youth, veterans, immigrant concern and artists. The small groups committed
to plan and stage at least one local action or event within the coming
week, and begin the process of organizing long-term, visible resistance in
the coming months. Some of the actions being planned included getting "No
War" signs posted in local businesses, the picketing of recruitment
offices, neighborhood vigils, study-groups, banner-drops, door-to-door
chats, potlucks, anti-war answering machine messages and peace caroling.
