gentry, folks,

here's my take on the feature .... i've shortened it up .... i think the
fuller length version should be posted to the newswire, and we can link to
both that and Walt's earlier report.

this is just working off what Gentry sent me earlier ... i haven't
cross-referenced to see if he included the comment & suggestions by Ericka
and Jean (how excellent to have their input!!) .... so please make those
changes if needed, or perhaps make any additions to the longer format
version that gets posted to the newswire.

thanks for putting this together Gentry, and thank you Walt for the report!

- Susan

Subtitle: ACTIVISTS RISK JAIL TO STOP WAR
Title: Twelve Seattle Peace Activists Arraigned

On Nov. 7, twelve local anti-war activists were arraigned in the Federal
District courtroom of Judge Martinez. Their crime? On 9/25/02, the
activists were arrested for a civil disobedience action at the Federal
Building in Seattle. The activists staged sit-ins at the offices of Senator
Patty Murray and Senator Maria Cantwell and were subsequently charged with
failure to obey the orders of federal officers.

At the time, neither of the Washington Senators had voiced their intentions
regarding how they would vote on the war referendum. The activists claim
that since an escalation of the war on Iraq seemed imminent, the direct
action was justified.

The twelve activists now face up to 30 days in jail and fines up to $5,000
each. A trial has been set for January 16, 2003 with Judge Weinberg, Room
3-B of the old Federal Court Building, 1010 5th Avenue, Seattle ...
