The Young Communist League, USA (YCLUSA) is
participating in the
Hemispheric Day of Action against the Free Trade Area
of the Americas
(FTAA) agreement, November 17th.
The Day of Action is also supported by the
International Student Union
(IUS), the United States Student Association (USSA),
the Canadian
Federation of Students (CFS) and the Continental
Organization of Latin
American and Caribbean Students (OCLAE).
If passed as is, the FTAA would be the most
significant trade
liberalization project to date. Its new rules and
regulations would
restrict governments from setting education and
environmental standards.
Workers would lose many of their safeguards due to
forced privatization. It
is clear that this model has failed, causing
widespread poverty and
environmental destruction.
YCLUSA is taking part in a coordinated action on
November 17 to insure that
our education: from high school to college is secure.
On November 22-24,
the YCL will also be holding its 7th National
Convention in Chicago, IL.
Youth resistance to corporate globalization and the
FTAA will be a major
theme of the Convention. Numerous international guests
will be in
attendance, including the President of the world
Federation of Democratic
Youth (WFDY) based in Budapest Hungary, the Young
Communist League of
Israel, and the General Union of Students of the Iraqi
Republic.
This November 17, Students from Canada, the United
States, Latin America
and the Caribbean will coordinate their actions to
send a message against
the further capitalist globalization of the Western
Hemisphere. Students
around the continent chose the International Student
Day to protest the
agreement because of the immense threat the FTAA poses
to elementary and
higher public education.
According to the National Coordinator of the YCL,
Libero Della Piana, "The
FTAA would make it illegal for us to maintain public
control of education."
The YCL pledges to vigorously oppose the adoption of
the FTAA and the
imposition of similar multilateral trade agreements
that fail to defend and
promote fair trade, environmentalism, workers rights,
democracy,
development, and human rights.
If you would like to know more about the FTAA, or the
coordinated acts of
resistance, Libero Della Piana is available
forinterviews.
