hi,
if someone is putting together a feature for buy nothing day, here's
a possible link. i'll ask staci to post something to the newswire.
these art spots are definitely a form of culture jamming as well as
media making. i went to a screening a few weeks back to highlight
the launch of their project and website. they are doing some cool
stuff. not overtly political, but anything that takes us out of the
commercialism space of corporate television and makes us think and
ponder and tweak us out of apathy is good media in my mind. i hope
we could include it.

>Hi Friends,
>
>On the busiest shopping day of the year, the day after American
>Thanksgiving, people from over thirty countries take a break from the frenzy
>and cast their vote against the global economy. To learn more about "Buy
>Nothing Day" visits www.adbusters.org .
>
>In honor of "By Nothing Day", November 29th, ArtSpots has purchased airtime
>for broadcast of the "Zen Scroll" spot (download at
>http://www.artspotsmedia.org/prod_zenscroll.html) The ArtSpot will play on
>KING 5 during the daytime rotation in a spot normally reserved for a
>commercial. "Zen Scroll" is a 30 second production about being happy with
>what you have. It is based on a modern translation of an ancient Zen text.
>ArtSpots (www.artspotsmedia.org), are media pieces created collaboratively
>by local film professionals and media artists that play on television, using
>commercial slots as a gallery. It is our hope that the pieces we create
>will help to generate a more emotionally connected, environmentally aware
>and sustainable culture.
>
>So why are we writing? Because there are several things you can do, any or
>all of which will be a big help. 1) You guessed it; we need money to pay
>for the airtime. Please send a donation to ArtSpots at 1308 NW 70th,
>Seattle, WA 98117. For every $20 we get, we can reach another 4,000 people
>with this sanity-producing message. 2) Watch the spot. We will have exact
>airtimes posted on our website by Thanksgiving on the Broadcasts page
>(http://www.artspotsmedia.org/broadcasts.html) 3) Pass this e-mail along.
>Tell others about "Buy Nothing Day". Especially tell members of the press.
>4) After the spot has broadcast, send e-mail to KING 5 (cennis at king5.com)
>telling them you liked seeing them broadcast it and encouraging them to give
>us better rates and pro bono spots in the future. 5) You can join us at
>Wiggly World's Little Theater the night of Nov 29th to help celebrate the
>opening of their Consumer Culture Festivities.
