I did not expect there to be a controversy over this line. Jonthan,
Susan and I had a conversation yesterday about the metaphorical meaning
of this and I feel more strongly than I did before that the line should
stay as it is. The first reason is to be true to the actual quote.
Noone in the movement is going to suddenly begin thinking that Indymedia
is encouraging people to take up arms. In fact, I believe that it may
cause people to think more deeply about being non-violent in our
strategy than if it were toned down. I think that to tone this down
with alternate wording would cause it to be viewed as watered down.
Maybe, my feelings about this have to do with how I view the
significance of our birthday. This is an event to celebrate and to
cause us to recommit with a passion. The media work we do is nothing
less than militant. Sometimes more so than others but lets be honest
with ourselves that the work we are doing is active resistance. Fells
like a little bit too much concern about PR to me.
