[green bar] HABITS OF OVER-CONSUMPTION

[title] Happy Un-holiday: Buy Nothing Day

[text] This coming Friday will mark the eleventh year
of the anti-consumption holiday, Buy Nothing Day. More
people are getting involved each year in a variety of
ways, but ultimately the point is to curb consumption
and think about what we buy.
<p>
During one of the busiest shopping days of the year,
many organizations, activists and enlightened
consumers will further the call for intelligent
consumption. Local organizations are calling for
shoppers to <a
href="http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=20034">"do
nothing"</a> with the message making its way onto <a
href="http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=20303&group=webcast">commercial
TV</a>, even as the <a
href="http://www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd/debate/comments.html">debate</a>
about Buy Nothing Day's affects continue.
<p>
Originally, the campaign was pushed internationally.
Though this still <a
href="http://www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd/toolbox/vote/2002victory.html">occurs</a>,
the core premise of the 'holiday' - unplugging from
consumer culture to reconnect with those around you -
has lent itself well to local grassroots organizing.
Activists, performers, and artists are mixing locally
to produce a three part <a
href="http://www.seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=20340&group=webcast">series
of exhibitions</a>, launching on Buy Nothing Day to
highlight all facets of consumption and gluttony.
