title: McDermott Tours Iraq as Popular Resistance to War Builds
<p>Last weekend, U.S. and British warplanes bombed an Iraqi civilian
airport in Basra for the second time in three days. During the attack, a US
Congressional delegation including Washington Representative Jim McDermott
was in the city as part of a <a
href="http://www.islam-online.net/english/news/2002-09/29/article39.shtml">controversial
tour</a> of Iraq. There he reviewed the humanitarian devastation caused by
ongoing US bombing long-term economic sanctions. "What worries me and my
colleagues is that if we go to war again we would simply double or triple
the problems we created in 1991," he said. McDermott has recently been one
of Capitol Hill's <a
href="http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18204">most vocal
critics</a> of the Bush administration's war drive, highlighting the
glaring inconsistencies in the official justifications for new attacks, and
pointing out that presidents gearing up for war <a
href="http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/0930-02.htm">often lie</a> to
the public. Commenting on McDermott's trip to Iraq, Senate Minority Leader
Trent Lott told reporters: "He needs to come home, and keep his mouth shut."
