Title: Anti-War Rally Volunteer Park Today at 1pm, March to Westlake
Around the United States this weekend, people are trying to stop the war
before it starts. Rallies in <a

<a
href=http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18447&group=webcast>Portland</a>,
<a
href=http://chicago.indymedia.org/archive/features/2002/10/2002-10.html#5339>Chicago</a>,
<a href=http://la.indymedia.org>Los Angeles</a>, <a
href=http://austin.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=3736&group=webcast>Austin</a>,
and <a href=

as well as a recent report on the <a
href=http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18150>overwhelming
number of people calling</a> their representatives in opposition to war
with Iraq, are demonstrating the breadth of popular opposition.
An <a

>overflow crowd (800 turned away)</a> heard Scott Ritter speak last night
about the horrors of war, the history of Iraqi arms inspections, and the
unconstitutionality of unilateral military action against Iraq. Jim
McDermott attended, receiving a standing ovation for <a href=
http://www.webactive.com/pacifica/demnow/dn20020930.html>Congressman his
recent stand</a> on the impending war. KCTS was the only major television
outlet covering the event, and they left early.
The American Civil Liberties Union and the National Lawyers Guild will be
<a
href=http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18410&group=webcast>watching
the political events closely</a> to see how law enforcement agencies will
handle the potentially large crowds. During demonstrations against the IMF
and World Bank in Washington DC on September 27, police arrested at least
650 demonstrators, including bystanders and journalists. In Seattle, the
anti-war protests are happening within a <a
href=http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18412&group=webcast
>context of growing discontment</a> including widespread teacher strikes
in weeks past, the lockout at local ports, and unrest in communities that
are repeatedly targetted for racial profiling and inequities in the
judicial system.
