hi-- i'm writing from Santa Cruz indymedia. we're a relatively new branch,
and very excited about the prospective projects we have in mind. we don't
have a real space yet, but we have good linkages with community TV, radio
and print resources, in addition to the web. once we do have a space
confirmed we hope eventually to build a complete information center. in the
next couple of months we're planning an independent journalism workshop and
an alternative media panel. of course all this is still in the early
planning stages, and there are a lot of things to figure out.
for example: at our last meeting we began a discussion about the ethics of
posting material or links on our website, and found that there were a lot of
differences of opinion on the best way to go about it. so we thought it
might be helpful to check in with other indymedias to see what your
practices are. all of this might be totally theoretical but if you have
any experience with this issue, we'd love to hear how you deal with it.
obviously when people post reports or features directly to the IMC,
that's simple.
but do you ever post material, or links to material that has appeared in
other publications? (ie copywrited)
if so: in the case of a freelance writer's work, would you seek their
consent to put up a link? or only to put up someone's text?
(that is, is there an issue of royalties? we would't want to rip off
any individual writer who needs to make a living.)
thanks for your help!
in solidarity, Maia (Santa Cruz IMC)
