subtitle: WORLDWIDE CALLS FOR PEACE INTENSIFY
title: Resistance Builds Against Bush's Plannned 'Pax Americana'

On Oct 26, many thousands in the US and worldwide demonstrated peacefully
against the Bush administration's stubborn plans to make war against Iraq.
The largest actions in the US took place in <a
hfref="http://dc.indymedia.org">Washington, DC</a> (100,000) and <a
href="http://sf.indymedia.org">San Francisco</a> (over 20,000), but
thousands marched across the country--in <a
href="http://www.tc.indymedia.org:8081/index.php3">Minneapolis</a>
(10,000), <a
href="http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=19380">Spokane</a>,
<a
href="http://chicago.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=15045">Chicago</a>,
<a href="http://www.tc.indymedia.org:8081/front.php3?article_id=7460">Sioux
Falls</a>, <a href="http://nc.indymedia.org/news/2002/10/1144.php">Durham,
NC</a>, <a
href="http://portland.indymedia.org/archive/features/2002/10/2002-10.html#5673">Portland</a>,
<a href="http://maine.indymedia.org/display.php3?article_id=2639">Augusta,
Maine</a> (3000), <a href="http://www.indyhawaii.org/">Hawai'i</a>, <a
href="http://madison.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=7899">Madison</a>,
and <a
href="http://indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=212853">elsewhere</a>.
6500 marched through downtown <a
href="http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=19352">Seattle</a>,
where <a
href="http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=19397">rally
speakers</a> included US Representatives Dennis Kucinich (Ohio) and Jim
McDermott. Read accounts of the Seattle demonstrations <a

and <a

<p>More large-scale protests against the American government's drive
towards war are taking place <a
href="http://indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=212853">around the
world</a>. Oct. 26 peace demonstrations were held in over <a
href="http://www.internationalanswer.org/news/update/102002intldemos.html">ten
countries</a>. UK protesters blockaded a US spy base at Meriwith
Hill;15,000 protested in Glasgow on October 20th. An anti-imperialist rally
was held in Brussels. Over 90 towns and cities in Germany protested in
solidarity with the US anti-war movement. In Spain, 3,000 protested in
Seville. Anti-war events took place in Rome and a half dozen other Italian
cities; major demonstrations are planned in London, Leeds, Brighton and
Manchester in the UK on October 31. More domestic unrest is sure to follow,
as the Bush administration and the Congressional leadership of both major
parties remain unwilling to consider alternatives to war.
