Subtitle: WASHINGTON: ACTIVISTS SAY NO TO IRAQ WAR
Title: Citizens Against the War Embracing a Variety of Activist Strategies

Twelve anti-war activists were <a
href=http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18117&group=webcast>arrested
Tuesday in Seattle for staging sit-ins at Senators Cantwell and Murray's
offices and demanding public statements in opposition to the war. Ranging
in age from 31 to 64, and representing diverse backgrounds and interests,
the activists urged their senators to issue an unambiguous public statement
of opposition to the war resolution currently being considered in both
houses of Congress.

Sit-ins were also reported in Minnesota, where <a
href=http://twincities.indymedia.org/>activists stayed overnight</a> in the
offices of Senators Paul Wellstone (D) and Mark Dayton (D). In both states,
anti-war citizens have been frustrated with their <a href=

representatives' hesitancy</a> to make a strong oppositional statement.

Mass resistance actions are being organized around the country and the
world, including a <a href=
http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18098&group=webcast>mass
action event</a> in Seattle, October 6, through the coordination of the Not
in Our Name coalition. There are a variety of <a href=

 >calls to action</a> to suit any citizen's comfort level from civil
disobediance to armchair activism. Online portals allow for quick, but
effective, <a
href=http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18106&group=webcast>letter-writing</a>
and <a href=

ng</a>.

The Seattle Times reported that <a href=
http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=iraqcong25m0&date=20020925&query=constituents>5000
calls were made</a> to Cantwell's office in the past week, and that of
those only 50 were in support of the war. Popular sentiment against the
war is also expressed by the statewide (<a href=
http://www.seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=17416&group=webcast >
Washington State Labor Council</a>) and national organizations (<a href=
http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18121&group=webcast >Gree
n Party of the U.S.</a>) that are issuing strong statements of opposition.

As for opportunities to make sense of the crisis situation, some are
reflecting on <a href=
http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18123&group=webcast>historical
parallels</a>, others are questioning the <a href=
http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=18103&group=webcast >
coincidental timing</a> with November Congressional elections, while still
others are looking forward to the insights of former U.N. weapons
inspector, Scott Ritter, who'll be <a href=

king in Seattle October 5th <a/>.
