subtitle: POTLUCKS, MASS MARCHES AND DIRECT ACTION
title: January 18 Marks Day of Massive National and International
Resistance to Bush's Iraq War.

The world witnessed perhaps an unprecedented level of synchronized anti-war
resistance, Saturday, January 18th, with hundreds of thousands of
protestors worldwide, demonstrating their opposition to an impending U.S.
war with Iraq. Opposition took various forms, from neighborhood
dinner-and-conversation gatherings throughout the local Puget Sound area
(see "Potlucks for Peace" feature below) to focused direct actions in
Canada and the Netherlands, to mass demonstrations in the streets of <a
href="http://dc.indymedia.org/archive/features/2003/01/2003-01.html#3089">Washington
DC</a>, <a
href="http://www.sf.indymedia.org/archives/archive_week_redirect.php?day=19&month=01&year=2003#1095">San
Francisco</a>, <a
href="http://portland.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=41366&group=webcast">Portland</a>,
and a number of international cities.

<p>Estimates have the DC protests numbering <a
href="http://dc.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=46490&group=webcast">265,000</a>
to <a
href="http://dc.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=46658&group=webcast">377,000</a>
and the San Francisco protests numbering <a
href="http://www.sf.indymedia.org/archives/archive_week_redirect.php?day=19&month=01&year=2003#1095">200,000</a>,
the largest street demonstration seen in California since the Vietnam
War. Solidarity rallies were held <a
href="http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=229645&group=webcast">around
the country, including several demonstrations in Washington State: <a
href="http://seattle.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=21543&group=webcast">Bellingham</a>
|  <a
href="http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=229591&group=webcast">Spokane</a>.

<p>Tens of thousands of people joined marches, demonstrations, rallies and
events in the deep chill of winter across <a
href=http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=229600&group=webcast">Canada</a>
to protest the looming war on Iraq. Events were held in over 30 communities
across the country, big and small, from Yellowknife to Fredericton. The
larger demonstrations across the country included 15-20,000 persons in
Toronto, 20,000 in Vancouver, 25,000 in Montreal, 15,000 in Halifax, and
3000 in Ottawa, with smaller demonstrations in many other
places. Canadians called on their government to end its support of US
plans for war.

<p>During the European Social Forum (ESF) in Florence in November 2002, the
date of 15 February was selected as the day for pan-European actions
against war in Iraq. Ten million people are expected to protest across the
continent on that date. Therefore, there were no major demonstrations
planned on 18 January. There were scattered <a

actions in many countries</a>, however. For an incomplete listing, see below:
