[Seattle-editorial] Terrorist Suspects Story

Gentry Lange g at art13.com

Hi everyone,

I object to reposting a story on terrorist suspects, there is no source for
this information other than me at this point, and I removed it as the people
who contacted me with the information face legal problems regarding this
story. I believe I made that clear in earlier emails, and it took me several
days to get this off the wire here and in Portland. At this point the
original 3 people detained have been arraigned for felony burglary, and I
have not had further contact with them to discredit this charge. The fact is
they are not talking to me anymore, and to post this rumor as news, based on
a story by me, without additional sources is bad journalism, and goes
against the requests of the defendents in the case.

Gentry

(rewritten from an earlier version based on Gentry's story). It's a bit
long but is intended to archive all the relevant info (and thus can be
updated)..

subtitle: "INTELLIGENCE" AND BRUTALITY
title: SPD Criticized for Aggressive use of Chemical Weaponry

Protests against the Law Enforcement Intelligence Unit expanded this
week to include criticism of aggressive police tactics which broke up a
protest rally on Tuesday evening, including the use of bicycles as weapons,
batons, pepper spray, concussion grenades, electric tazers and guns loaded
with plastic, rubber and wooden projectiles. While these weapons are called
"non-lethal," but which have been linked to serious injuries (see feature
below).
Apparently embarassed by media attention to the incident, in which legal
observers and both mainstream and independent journalists were injured
by police attacks, SPD officers claimed that protesters were hurling glass
jars, ball bearings and other objects at them. However, SPD refused
to back up this claim when questioned by a Post-Intelligencer reporter.

Unconfirmed
reports suggested that several protesters detained Tuesday by Seattle
police were held because their names were part of a list of names "flagged
for possible links to terrorist organizations." Nothing more is known, and
the original posting has been removed by request of the author.
The coalition opposing the LEIU includes police accountability activists,
civil liberties organizations and anti-war groups. The week of
demonstrations has succeeded in organizers' primary intention of "outing"
the private intelligence network and its corporate sponsors, forcing LEIU
officials to issue carefully worded statements acknowledging the
organization's past abuses of information networks while denying present
wrongdoing, claiming that the LEIU now only keeps tabs on "criminals."

Hey.

As far as I can tell, no posts at all have been hidden from the newswire
recently (and no proposals to do so have appeared on the editorial list),
except for one post which was hidden by the author himself (Gentry). In
the interest of transparency, this hide was noted in the current top
feature, which I wrote.

Not sure what "natal screeds" or "third position infiltrators" are, or what
posts you might be talking about. At any rate, the proper course for
dealing with a perceived newswire problem is spelled out on the website as
follows:

above the newswire there's an "editorial policy" link which points to this
page:
http://seattle.indymedia.org/policy.php3

the page outlines the values of the site administrators, explains under
what circumstances an article can be hidden, and links to the page
explaining the specific procedure:
http://seattle.indymedia.org/newswire-hide.php3

this page includes very specific information about the entire process and
lists the email address of the editorial collective.

hope that helps,

Jonathan

Walt at the space. I had a call from Bruce of local anarchist antifascist
activity.

He was relaying dismay of others, back east as well, who came to the seattle
site and wanted to check about LEIU.

Instead they were affronted by the nearly dozen NATAL SCREEDS on the wire,
mostly of course disimformatively attributed to Arabs (otherwise refered to
as "Sand Niggars" when they are more forthright and not on the 3rd position
scam)

So people want to know "why we are hosting National Alliance on the site."
And Bruce wants to know what happened to the peace they put to inform the
public what was happening with these postings, to warn the naive about the
"third position" infiltrations.

Who what why

Basic journalism. Basic education. Basic newswire theory.

Basically not being done. And Bruce wants to know who took down the expose
and left the screeds untouched. I trust that Bruce is correct about their
getting the post up and seeing it posted. I trust Bruce that it was up and
then gone.

The question is did IMC editorial or did NATAL?

Got any clues?

On three occasions the article below, attempting to
advertise my new Web site, was posted to Indy media.
On each occasion it was taken down without
explanation. There is no conceivable sane explanation
for this. The item is news -- it announces an event.
It does not mention (shhhh . . .) the word 'race'.

It is my intention to put it up every time they take
it down. However, I do have to sleep and work so I
can't monitor it 24 hours a day. Therefore I'd be
mighty grateful if EVERYONE who reads this would just
highlight and copy the following article, then pop
along to http://www.indymedia.org and repost it for
me. It doesn't matter if it's still up when you go
there -- after all, if they want a battle I think the
very least we can do is fight back hard!

Here's what they're terrified that people might see:
