subtitle: MEDIA POLICY IS A LOCAL GOVERNMENT ISSUE
title: City Council Candidates on Media Issues

Seattle-based media activist group Reclaim the Media has
conducted its first Candidate Survey, asking Seattle City Council
candidates to go on the record concerning significant media policy issues.
In the next couple of years, the city will be renegotiating important cable
franchise agreements with Comcast and Millennium. These contracts will
determine many facets of how the city's neighborhoods receive cable TV and
broadband Internet service for years to come; they're also Seattle's
opportunity to get a lot more benefits from the cable providers in return
for their lucrative access to our homes and public rights-of-way. We need
to know whether our public officials are up to speed on these issues, and
to know where they stand - either to hold them accountable to stated
positions, or to press them for change.
