My main goal is to move this decision forward in the next week or so.

I'm not sure I'd concur. SF Active, to my way of thinking, is difficult to
navigate. Legitimate newswire postings disappear into various cubbyholes
without clear reference on the front page. The segmented (pre-sorted)
newswire is so short that if you drop in morning and evening, you're going
to miss the mid-day posts, whereas a day-at-a-glance gives readers a clear
rundown of what happened in town that day. Besides, pre-sorting the newswire
into sub-headings is more an editorial convenience than a reader
convenience, which misses the point by a mile, I think. The UI is awkward,
above the fold being a maddening mixture of unreferenced text columns. It
may be easier to maintain, but the UI is shameful.
I'm a fan of MiR and IMC Oscailt, having seen both at work, and would
encourage more significant consideration of each.
Much consideration should be paid to default text sizes, colors to ease the
eye while reading, and sufficient 'white space' to delineate both areas of
interest and the criteria by which they are separated and presented.
My $0.02...
