[Seattle-editorial] latest story?

The post on victims was fine. I just haven't had much computer time to respond. I have another link I will add on this same topic.
As to the features, I'm fine with controversy. We definitely need more writing in general, controversial or otherwise. No one responded to my 911 idea either. Ideas are harder to respond to than finished stories.
I'll respond in detail later.

Gentry would be most swell if you would put together 911 feature and move cosmic story to a favorite link in it. I'm not wild about sending people off site. For the sake of time, we might want to look at setting a more focused editorial policy. A more narrow focus would help us not waste time on extraneous decision making.
1) For instance no outside highlight links, would keep us better focused to the newswire; of course in that case, we need to ask readers to only post original non-copyrighted material. It won't prevent them from posting copyrighted stuff, but at least we'll already have a policy in place not to use it.
2) Give priority to local stories and local writers.
3) Have a mechanism for recognizing editors; i.e., attend editorial meetings; shared editorial vision; have been given password access.
4) Have better clarified editoral responsibilities: outreach, recruit and encourage writers and photographers to post work, set editorial policy, work with tech group on web issues.
5) We may want to give free-lance journalists a better mechanism for posting their work with us. As editors we should be tracking who our free-lancers are, documenting and recognizing their work for us. (Does anyone have such a list?)
6) Finally, I'm a little discouraged with how timid the feature section is. Nothing really controversial, nothing that will really get people to sit up and take action has really been posted. (I guess I wonder why the "Victims of War" photos were ignored.)
Just my thoughts, Judy

Everyone liked it and approved it with the stipulation to site source; however, it was posted anonymously and the copyright issues of just claiming it as our own off the newswire became apparent to me. I tried to contact the writer via the web site only to have my email not go through and disappear on me. We don't really have a policy about sending readers off site; some don't feel it is a bad thing. So reluctantly I just linked it to the site. I agree the site looks bad and commercial; a real shame as the article is really great. It is the web site for The San Francisco Chronicle.
