Hey ya'll,
Thanks so much for including the October 7th National Day Against
Military Recruitment on your home page as part of the International Days
of Protest Against War. That was called by the national youth network of
Not In Our Name. For NION here locally, the protest on the 5th is our
main focus and is where we'll be announcing the kick-off of the
anti-recruitment campaign and plans for a counter-recruiting action on
the 7th. So could you please add an entry about the October 5th action to
that list of Seattle Peace Events? Here's the info and our website
calendar makes a good link--it's very up-to-date. (By the way, feel free
to steal from it anytime. We list lots of events--not just ours.)
Protest: Sunday, October 5
"WE SEE THROUGH THE LIES!"
War is not peace.
Occupation is not liberation.
Immigrants are not terrorists.
Police state restrictions are not security.
Rally at Volunteer Park Amphitheater, Seattle 1pm (10th Ave E and
Prospect)
March through the city to the INS Dentention Center (815 Airport Way S.
and Dearborn)
Midpoint is Westlake (4th & Pine)
This is a legally permitted, family-friendly action.
In keeping with the theme, NION will provide a thousand signs shaped like
eyes that say "We See Through the Lies!" This long march will take
participants through the most crowded parts of the city to reach as many
people as possible, and then end at the INS detention center where
immigrants are being unjustly detained under the guise of the so-called
"War on Terrorism." We will go down Broadway, by Westlake Center, to Pike
Place Market, along 1st Ave, and through a bit of the International
District before reaching our destination. Those needing a shorter march
are encouraged to meet up with us at Westlake (4th & Pine). The march
will leave Volunteer Park at approximately 2:30 pm.
The rally will include performances by:
Andrew Himes, Executive Director of Poets Against the War
Jim Page
Sons of Hagar
Michael Bade
Mary K. McNeil and the Intergenerational Peace Choir. (Ms. McNeil is the
music teacher who chose not to return to her job at Olympic View
Elementary after the school principal said that the children could sing
about peace but in no way could they suggest anything about stopping war.
See Seattle PI story at
