our mission statement:
The Independent Media Center is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as a tool for promoting social and economic justice. It is our goal to further the self-determination of people under-represented in media production and content, and to illuminate and analyse local and global issues that impact ecosystems, communities and individuals. We seek to generate alternatives to the biases inherent in the corporate media controlled by profit, and to identify and create positive models for a sustainable and equitable society.

>2. description of the project
This really will be from the ground up, though we have 'dreamed' for a long while of cataloging/indexing and creating a search engine function.
Some of this is beyond the scope you offer, but I think it may be parallell, as for the specific search classifications we use. I guess it will depend on what the time available from the volunteers/interns might be.
I'd like to have some open discussions on these issues (index classifications) to preceed actual work time from the interns.
There might be value in some imc techie involvement, as I understand you have offered to "online" the index. It will have to fit our sourcecoding and I don't know but there may be tech issues arise.
We can then modularize some discreet projects that one or two can complete easily. At present the videos are alphabetized on a shelf and we have a listing to match.
We are not classed by topics, geography, speakers on the tapes...We have no classification by countries depicted, union issues or indigenous, enviro...
We would like this project to ease researh use, as well as just be a film watchers selection tool.
But then my biases may be getting over ambitious for you. I hope you understand I have hopes to inspire our network, as well as just polish our local collectives offerings. That means keeping it simple and accesable to our members for update. So we should have enough to start with in the films, let alone the books too.
>3. provide contact info
I am willing to give this project the ownership it needs. But because we have events and other activities, we need to coordinate and reserve in coordinated fashon with other events to insure an optimum worksite. It will need the capability to view tapes I am supposing.
So I am willing to recieve input and co-ordinate this from anarch3m at lycos.com.
Others may join and we can work as a c.c. list
>4. indicate that we prefer a candidate who has
>advanced cataloging knowledge (her suggestion!)
We are rankest amateurs who don't yet know what we want or what we can have. Experience from the interns can help us decide what we can accomplish, and help us plan the modules.

>Will you do a paragraph or two on the IMC, and e-mail

>Project description:
>The IMC currently owns a small, un-cataloged library
>of outstanding social justice documentaries, films,
>books and magazines. Our mission is to make these
>materials as accessible as possible to the public, as
>the educational value of any of these materials is
>dependent on the widest possible viewing and
>distribution.
My wording: Our mission is to make these materials acessable for researchers and educators as well as to make these materials as accessible as possible to the public. The educational value of any of these materials is dependent on the widest possible viewing and distribution. If the choice of what to view can become a simple and confidant choice, we are sure to promote more viewing.
