On Sunday, January 11th, 2004 The <b>Backbone Campaign</b> gave its first 
Backbone Award to Congressman <a 
href="http://seattle.indymedia.org/en/2004/01/238006.shtml"><b>Jim 
McDermott</b></a>, presented following his State of Our Union address "The 
War and Peace Report," at a meeting sponsored by the Capitol Hill Neighbors 
for Peace and Justice and the Lutheran Peace Fellowship in Seattle. Artists 
and activist groups around the country are invited to create their own 
Backbone Awards ceremonies, in recognition of courageous elected officials 
willing to take principled progressive stands at politically lonely
