[Seattle-editorial] FP: Backbone award

Hi everyone,

I am not a member of the editorial group and have no vote on
this. But for what it's worth I oppose anything which promotes
illusions that anything good can come from the Democratic Party.
The Democratic Party is just as much an imperialist party as the
Republican Party. The Democratic Party has supported Bush's wars
in Afghanistan and in Iraq to the hilt. If Bush wins re-election
and decides to invade Iran the Democratic Party will likely
support him on that one also.

"courageous elected officials willing to take principled
progressive stands at politically lonely moments" ?

If we want to give more politicians a "backbone" then we should
turn our back on the Democratic Party--including the supposedly
"principled" politicians who promote the idea that something good
can come from it. As the influence of the Democratic Party among
activists erodes--more activists will be thinking in terms of
independent mass actions that tell the masses the truth about
imperialism. At this point the ruling bourgeoisie will become
concerned--and give permission to many of their flunkies like
McDermott--telling them to make what ever noise is necessary so
that activists will again believe that we should beg for peace
from the gods of war.

Sincerely,
Ben Seattle
