M,
This has been discussed by SEAIMC Editorial. Thanks for your
thoughtful analysis.
Our new software, Mir, allows this type of 'voting' to occur for
the ranking of articles by the general readership. To make the
software do what you suggest would be relatively easy.
Not to nay-say, but there are considerations:
SEAIMC has an unofficial policy of not harvesting I.P. addresses
from readers or Publishers. We do this for legal reasons, and in
recognition of the tradition of anonomous publishing by individuals
and groups who wish to so publish.
The Seattle IMC believes that insurrectionist speech can do harm,
but is a fundamental right, especially of the free press. We
recognize the fact that positive political change can occur when
people speak and publish any opinion at all, and can be suppressed
by official or unofficial editing or censorship. Hence the open
newswire.
We also take responsibility for keeping our space safe and useful
for the people. We have a firmly established set of guidelines for
the removal and or hiding of posts on our newswire. In a nutshell,
we are able to control the content of the newswire, but don't have
enough time to keep up with the trolls, infiltrators, insane, and
misguided.
We are not open for anyone to say anything about whatever.
If you can possibly attend one of the meetings of the Editorial
Collective, you can easliy become an Editor, with collective
approval. Participation is our fuel, and our edge. It is what makes
us the largest grass roots news organization ever.
I implore you to join us, in any way you can-any way at all. Make
us in your minds eye of what the Peoples media can be.
I will help anyone wanting to join us and help us thrive in our
mission. I will be glad to help you get involved and to take the
reigns. That ablity, to help others learn and make Independent
Media, is why I choose indymedia as my place of activism.
While we (The entire Seattle IMC - Editorial and Tech are still
working and we need help) are now in an official pause to re-
imagine and reorganize our Collective, many of us still work to
make activist media here.
Most Sincerely,
Joseph Eisenschmidt
