Why Press Freedom? - Celebrate World Press Freedom Day - May 3, 2004

As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day on May 3, it is helpful to
think about why press freedom matters. We know that media play a part
in almost every aspect of social and democratic endeavors, from
helping mitigate terrorism and conflict to assisting in the fight
against HIV/AIDS. We also understand that free media are critical to
establishing and maintaining democratic societies.
