Friends,
Who are we?
That is to say, who in the Seattle Independent Media Center is a
Member of the Editorial Collective? Who wants to be?
Technically, since the Collective requires at least some interaction
with the group, either online or at meetings, we may have as few as
2 members, including me, and at most 7.
I have convened all of the Editorial Collective meetings (4 or
5)since the pause, and the attendees were:
Laury, Mark, Tonieh(Once), Walt, Benjamin, and his Bro(Once),
Gentry(Once). Jason and Sheri did at least some work as well.
The question is, who at this point volunteers to attend meetings,
write , and clerk the wire? That's what we do.
S.B. is the entire SeattleTech collective. So, in addition to Randy
and Paul, the four $ admins(Walt, Sheri, Devon, and Rick), some of
whom have done a lot stuff and some of whom have done a little, who
are we? Who makes up the SEAIMC?
When we hold the J-15 meeting we may see 10-30 people who are
interested parties, but if folks can show up and vote, and then do
no work, those who do the work are in effect subordinated to a
defacto outside board of directors. We work, you decide on what and
how.
This not an attractive model for new volunteers, as they rightly
feel that a workers collective with 10 people doing all the work,
and 30 folks showing up with strong opinions on how they should do
it and making the decisions , but then not doing any of it
themselves, is elitist and about as hierarchical as you can get.
My sister the Teamster has a lot of seniority at UPS. She attained
this not by joining, but by showing up at work every single day for
many years, and working as hard as she can. Seniority is one form of
hierarchy that is fairer than most, but grandfathering people in
from the past reminds one of the Roman Senate. Once a Senator,
always a Senator, right?
So, who will show up at the next Editorial Meeting if at all
possible and agree to clerk and write and interact with the activist
and media-underserved communities? Who needs a Password to do these
things?
Who are we at Editorial?
In Solidarity,
Joseph Eisenschmidt
