The problems with iCal are more that it maps very well to the needs of the
business community, and the scheduling domain, and poorly to anything
else. SKiCal is an attempt to expand iCal beyond this very limited
domain, but it is kind of an unnatural extension. This, plus its an old
school standard that doesn't leverage any of the advantages of the
web/xml/rdf era.
