URGENT ACTION: VIOLENCE AGAINST THE CAMPESINO MOBILISATION IN CAUCA DEPARTM=
ENT
Since 3pm today (Thursday 19 September) anti-riot units of the army and, it=
=20
appears, the police, have unleashed a relentless attack with tear gas and=
=20
beatings against the campesinos, some 4,500, who are in La Maria=20
(municipality of Peindamo) 30 km from Popayan. The surprise attack against=
=20
the defenceless agricultural workers was unleashed even though they are not=
=20
occupying any roads. The campesinos (including women and children) are=20
camping in the fields of surrounding farms, surviving without medicines,=20
only one meal a day, and exposed to the elements, because the army
confiscated their plastic sheets, tents and food in order to break them=20
through hunger and the ravages of the climate. The campesino population is=
=20
only asking the national and regional government to accept a commission of=
=20
their representatives and allow them to hold a peaceful demonstration in=20
Popayan, where they would deliver their list of petitions and present their=
=20
thoughts on poverty and state abandonment. They were hoping for negotiations
to be established with the government so that they could then return to=20
their allotments.
There is a great deal of fear at the thought of what could happen to the=20
campesinos, even more so when yesterday one of the demonstrators died in=20
this same spot, victim of a heart attack when the army tried to move them=
=20
away. The campesinos have rejected emphatically the accusations made by the=
=20
military authorities that this was a demonstration called for by the=20
insurgency. "It is autonomous and peaceful and for that reason we asked for=
=20
international observers to show that the only things that made us march=20
were poverty and the lack of educational and health services, as well as=20
the lack of financial help to cultivate the land," it was stated in a=20
communique by the Cauca campesinos.
Apart from La Maria where there are 4.500 campesinos, there are another two=
=20
groups. One is holding out in Pandiuando (El Tambo municipality), where=20
there are around 800 farm labourers exposed to the elements at the road=20
side, surrounded by the army. There is real fear in this place since the=20
paramilitaries announced there could be a massacre at any moment. The other=
=20
nucleus of demonstrators is in the Sajandi river basin, near to La Fonda=20
(El Patia jurisdiction) where there are some 6,000 campesinos, also=20
surrounded by the army. In this area very many people have fallen ill=20
through drinking contaminated water.
WE URGENTLY DEMAND AN END TO THE AGGRESSION, THAT THE GOVERNMENT OF DR URIBE
ALLOWS OUR DEMONSTRATION AND THAT THE GOVERNMENT LISTENS TO OUR JUST AND
DEMOCRATIC PETITIONS!!!!

Desde las 3pm de hoy jueves 19 de septiembre/2002, grupos antimotines del=

Ej=E9rcito y al parecer tambi=E9n de la Polic=EDa, han desatado un repentin=

a=20
